I Corinthians 9:11-14; Acts 11:27-30

The New Testament authorizes preachers to be supported financially so that they may

preach the gospel.

Did churches in the first century send money to aid other Christians who were in need?

Do these verses provide authority for churches to fund recreational or social

activities for people today?

Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16

Does the Bible teach that you are to sing and make melody “in your heart to the Lord”?

What three things am I to do as I sing to others?

Can a mechanical instrument of music accomplish any of the things that God wants me to

do when I sing?

The New Testament does not authorize Christians to use mechanical instruments of

music in worship to God.

II Timothy 4:1-5; II John 9-11

Preachers are charged with the responsibility of preaching the word of God.

What three things are to be done “with all longsuffering and doctrine”?

Did Paul warn Timothy that some would not want to hear his preaching, but would turn

from the truth unto “fables”?

A man who does not abide in the “doctrine (teaching) of Christ” loses his  fellowship with

God.

If I help or support a man who is not teaching the “doctrine of  Christ”, do I become  a

participant in his evil work?

II Timothy 2:15-18; Titus 2:1

Part of a preacher’s work includes “shunning (avoiding) profane and vain babblings.”

Is it right for a preacher to specifically identify the name of a false teacher as well as the

doctrine that he preaches?

Titus 1:4-5; Acts 14:23

According to the New Testament, a plurality of elders were to be appointed in every

church.

Acts 20:17, 28-31; I Peter 5:1-3

Were the elders of each congregation given the responsibility to “feed” (pastor) and

“oversee” that congregation?

The oversight of elders is limited to that local “flock,” or church, which is among them.

Would God be pleased if we changed the organization of the church from that which He

has revealed?

Will it please God if we add a Pope to the organization of the church, or if the elders of

one church try to oversee the work of another church?

I Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-11

In order to be an elder (or, pastor) , one must meet the qualifications that God has

ordained.

According to the Bible, can a woman be a pastor (elder)?

An elder must be able to teach the word of God as well as rebuke those who teach false

doctrines.

Do the words “preacher” and “pastor” refer to the same office? (cf. Eph. 4:11)

Philippians 1:1; I Timothy 3:8-13

Is there another office in the local church known as a deacon?

Like elders, deacons must also meet certain qualifications as revealed by God.

The word “deacon” means

I Corinthians 16:1-2; II Corinthians 9:6-7

Were the Christians in Corinth commanded to take up a collection upon the first day of

the week, the same day that Christians in Troas had met to observe the Lord’s Supper?

God loves a                         giver.

The New Testament commands that Christians give a “tithe”, or ten percent, of their

income to the Lord.

 I Corinthians 11:20-29

Was Paul pleased that the Corinthians had turned the Lord’s Supper into a common

meal?

Paul said that if I am hungry, I should eat at    ______.

Paul said I should proclaim (or show) the Lord’s death, through the Lord’s Supper,

until He comes.

The man who does not observe the Lord’s Supper properly eats and drinks

to himself.

God expects me to remember Christ’s death  on the cross by eating the Lord’s Supper

on the first day of every week.  (drunken: to have drunk much, not necessarily

intoxicated)

I Corinthians 10:16-17; Acts 20:7

Is the idea of  “breaking bread” ever used to refer to the Lord’s Supper or Communion?

Did the Christians at Troas meet upon the First Day of the Week to observe the Lord’s

Supper or “break bread”?

Would it please God if we used potato chips and Coke for the Lord’s Supper, or

observed it on a different day (ex.-Thursday)?

Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:19-20

Did Jesus use both “bread” and “fruit of the vine” for the Lord’s Supper?

Jesus taught that the “bread” was a symbol of His body and the “fruit of the vine” a symbol

of His blood.

I Thessalonians 5:17; Philippians 4:6-7

A Christian is to pray to God on a regular and continual basis.

Our requests to God in prayer are to be accompanied with

(careful: anxious)

Hebrews 10:24-25

Is it God’s will that I assemble together with other Christians?

Will I be pleasing God if I choose to forsake the assembling together of the saints?

Assembling together with other saints is one way to provoke or stir each other to love and

good deeds.

Titus 2:11-14; Galatians 6:7-9

As a Christian, are you permitted to live in an ungodly manner or as you choose?

I must live a godly, spiritual life in order to reap eternal life in the end.

I Peter 2:1-2; II Timothy 2:15

As a Christian, must you continue to study God’s word that you may grow?

All who study the Bible must be sure to “rightly divide” or “handle accurately” (NASV)                         the word of God.

Acts 2:41-42; Romans 12:1-2

Did the Christians in Acts 2 serve God by continuing in the “apostles’ doctrine

(teaching)”?

Am I as a Christian permitted to live as I choose or to serve God as I want?

We should follow the example of the Christians in the Bible as to how we are to serve                        and worship God today.  (cf. Phil. 4:9) (reasonable: rational, logical)

Acts 2:41-42 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Rom 12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1 Peter 2:1-2 Therefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

2 Tim 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13. Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14. Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Gal 6:7-9  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Heb 10:24  And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

1 Thess 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

Phil 4:6-7  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Matt 26:26-29 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28. For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

1 Cor 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

1 Cor 11:20-29 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. 21. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22. What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. 23. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. 27. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

1 Cor 16:1-2 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

2 Cor 9:6-7 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

1 Cor 9:11-14 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? 12. If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. 13. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? 14. Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Acts 11:27-30 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. 28. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. 29. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: 30. Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

2 Tim 4:1-5  I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

2 John 9-11 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11. For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

2 Tim 2:15-18 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18. Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

Titus 2:1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

Titus 1:4-5 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. 5. For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

Acts 14:23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

Acts 20:17 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.

Acts 20:28-31 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 13. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

1 Peter 5:1-3The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2. Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3. Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

1 Tim 3:1-7 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3. Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4. One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5. (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6. Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Titus 1:5-11 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: 6. If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. 7. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; 8. But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9. Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. 10. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11. Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

Phil 1:1  Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

1 Tim 3:8-13  Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9. Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
