I JOHN – LESSON 6


I. KNOWING THE CHARACTER OF LOVE (3:13-24)

A. Because of your righteous acts, you will be hated by the world (v. 13).

B. You have passed out of death into life if you love your brother (v. 14).

C. You are a murderer if you hate your brother (v. 15).


D. Christ’s manifestation of true love manifested in self-sacrifice for brethren’s well-being (v. 16-18).


E. Loving according to truth gives us assurance before an omniscient and personal God (v. 19-22).


F. Two-fold commandment for pleasing God: believe on the name of the Son, and love one another (v. 23-24).

1. Keeping God’s commandments objective standard for abiding in God

2. The source of the commandments is the Spirit.

I. KNOWING THE TRUE SPIRIT (4:1-6)

A. False spirits are producing false teaching in the world – prove them (v. 1).

B. The true spirits confess the Christ has come in the flesh (v. 2-3).

C. Having the spirit of truth is key is overcoming the world (v. 4-6)

  

II. PERFECTING GOD’S LOVE (4:7-21)


A. God’s love manifested by the giving of His Son for the sins of all (v. 7-10).

      

B. Two demands for abiding in God (v. 11-16)

1. Initiate the same character of love toward our brother as God did toward us.

2. Confess Jesus to be the Son of God.


C. The blessing of manifesting God’s love toward others: confidence in judgment (v. 17-21)
