2 THESSALONIANS – LESSON 9


I. PERSECUTED THESSALONIANS STRENGTHENED WITH NEWS OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUS RETRIBUTION (2 Thess. 1:1-12)

A. Address and Greeting (v. 1-2)

     1. Paul, Silvanus (Silas) and Timothy address the church.

     2. The church of the Thessalonians receive greeting.

         a. in God

         b. in the Lord Jesus Christ

     3. Greeting of grace and peace

            B. Paul gives well deserved thanks unto God for the Thessalonians (v. 3).

                 1. For their FATIH growth exceedingly

                 2. Their LOVE for each other aboundeth.  

C. Paul glories to churches over Thessalonians’ PATIENCE and FAITH in persecutions (v. 4-6).

     1. Enduring persecutions is outward sign that Thessalonians believe in the righteous judgment of God.

     2. Enduring persecutions allows one to be counted worthy of the kingdom of God.

     3. It is a righteous thing for God to recompense those who afflict the Thessalonians.

D. The revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven gives rest to the afflicted Thessalonians (v. 7-10).

     1. The Lord will come from heaven with angels of His power in flaming fire (v. 7).  

     2. The Lord will render vengeance to them who know not God and obey not His Gospel (v. 8).

     3. Disobedient will suffer punishment (v. 9).

         a. Eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and the glory of His might

                 4. The Lord will come to be glorified in His saints (v. 10).

                 5. The Lord will come to be marveled at in all them that believe.

                     a. Believers now in the testimony of the apostles

             E. Paul’s continual prayer on behalf of the Thessalonians (v. 11-12)

                 1. That God would count them worthy of calling (v. 11).

                 2. That God would fulfill all the good pleasure of goodness (v. 11).

                 3. That God would fulfill all the work of faith with power (v. 11).

                 4. Purpose of prayer:

                     a. That the name of the Lord Jesus may be glorified among them.

                     b. That they may be glorified in Him.
