ACTS: LESSON 12


XII. PAUL’S FIRST APPOINTED PREACHING TOUR (Chapters 13-14).

A. The Holy Spirit separates Barnabas and Saul from the church in Antioch to go on their preaching mission (13:1-3).

B. Saul and Barnabas proclaim the word of the Lord as they journey throughout the whole island of Cyprus (13:4-12).

1. They sail from SELEUCIA to CYPRUS.

2. They proclaim the word of the Lord at SALAMIS in the synagogues of the Jews.

a. John Mark is their attendant.

3. At PAPHOS, Saul blinds Elymas, the false prophet, for perverting the right ways of the Lord before the                 proconsul Sergius Paulus.

C. Paul and company arrive at PERGA of PAMPHYLIA – John Mark decides to leave Paul and Barnabas and returns                  to Jerusalem (13:13).

D. Paul and Barnabas arrive in ANTIOCH of PISIDIA and Paul preaches in a synagogue on the Sabbath day (13:14-50)

1. Paul exhorts the Jews and proselytes with reminders of God’s working with Israel from bringing them out of                 Egypt to the choosing Saul and David as kings (13:14-22).

2. From David’s offspring, Jesus has come to be the Savior fulfilling prophecy concerning His death and                     resurrection (13:23-37).

3. In Jesus is proclaimed remission of sins (13:38-39).

4. Warning from prophets if word is not heeded (13:40-41)

5. Jews desire to hear more the following Sabbath day – Jews and proselytes encouraged to continue in the grace                 of God (13:42-43).

6. Paul and Barnabas turn to the Gentiles when the Jews contradict the word the following day(13:44-49)

7. The Jews arouse the prominent women and men of the city to drive out Paul and Barnabas from the district                 (13:50).

E. Paul and Barnabas preach in ICONIUM (14:1-7)

1. Great multitude of Jews and Greeks believe.

2. The Lord bears witness to the apostles teaching with miracles.

3. Disobedient Jews stir up trouble for the apostles – city divided.

4. Paul and Barnabas thwart Jews’ attempt to stone them by fleeing to LYSTRA and DERBE of LYCAONIA.

F. Paul’s miracle and stoning in LYSTRA (14:8-20).

1. Paul heals man crippled from birth.

2. Inhabitants try to worship Paul and Barnabas as gods.

3. Jews from Antioch and Iconium persuade people to stone Paul – he is dragged outside of the city and thought                 to be dead.

G. Paul and Barnabas preach the Gospel in DERBE and confirm souls by returning to LYSTRA, ICONIUM, and                 ANTIOCH (14:21-23).

H. Paul and Barnabas preach the Word in PERGA before returning to the church in ANTIOCH with reports of the                 events of their first preaching tour (14:24-28).
