GENESIS – LESSON ONE

I.  GOD’S WORK OF CREATION (1:1-2:25)

A.  The Six Days of Creation (1:1-31)

1.  Day One:  Creation of the heavens and the earth and light (1:1-5).

2.  Day Two:  Creation of the firmament of heaven (1:6-8).

3.  Day Three: Creation of grass, herbs and fruit bearing trees, Dry land earth appears after waters are gathered        into their place (1:9­13).

4.  Day Four:  Creation of the stars, sun, and moon (1:14-19).

5.  Day Five:  Creation of sea creatures and birds that fly in the firmament of  Heaven (1:20-23).

6.  Day Six:   Creation of cattle, creeping things, beasts of the earth and man (1:24-31)  

a.     Man created in the image of God

b.     Man to subdue and have dominion over the animals

c.     Man provided food from the herb and fruit yielding trees.

d.     Everything God made was “very good.”

B.  God Rests on the seventh day: the seventh day blessed and hallowed (2:1-3)

C.  The Beginning History of God’s dealing with Man (2:4-25)

1. The earth before the plants and herbs of the earth sprang forth

            a.  no rain yet.

            b.  no man yet to till the ground

                                    c. earth watered by mist going up from the earth

2.  God forms man (2:7).

a.  God forms man from the dust of the ground

b.  God breathes into man’s nostrils the breath of life.

c.  Man becomes a living soul.

3.  God plants a garden in Eden (2: 8-15).

a.  God causes the trees to grow out of the ground.

b.  River that waters the garden splits outside of Eden into four rivers: Pishon, Gihon, Hiddekel (Tigris)                    and Euphrates.

c.  Man placed in garden to dress and keep it.

4.  God ‘s commandment regarding the trees in the garden (2:16-17)

a.  Man may freely eat from all trees in the garden

b.  One prohibition: Man may not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

c.  Consequences of disobeying God: “in that day that thou eatest, thou shalt surely die.”

 5.  God creates woman for man from the side of man (2:18-25).

a.  No help suitable for man in all of creation

b.  God creates woman from a rib of man

c.  God brings woman to man for them to be one flesh

d.  Both were naked and not ashamed.

QUESTIONS:

1.  Where does The Book of Genesis take man back in history?

2.  Is there a “gap” for a created earth in verse 1, to become waste and void in verse 2, in the first chapter of Genesis ?

3.  What is meant by the earth being “waste” and “void” at creation?

4.  How did God bring forth light on the first day of creation?

5.  There was the creation of light before the creation of the sun (T) (F)

6.  In Genesis one, what kind of “days” are being presented?

7.  What does the word “firmament” mean?

8.  How did God cause the dry land of earth to appear?

9.  In Genesis 1:11, does the word “kind” have the same connotation as our word “species” does today?

25.  From Genesis 2, how do you answer those among our brethren who make the following points trying to establish an ancient earth , billions of years old instead of thousands of years old ?

(1)  The days of creation do not have to be a literal 24-hour day for we are still in the “seventh” day - God continues to rest today from creation in the seventh day.

(2).  There were too many activities on the sixth day – creation of earth animals, creation of man, and man naming all the animals for it to be a literal 24-hour period.
