        JOSHUA: LESSON ONE


I. PREPARATION FOR ENTERNING PROMISED LAND (Chapters 1-3)

A. God’s encouraging charge to Joshua (1:1-9)  

1. Joshua told to arise and go over Jordan to take promised land   (cf. Deuteronomy 11:24)

a. From wilderness (south) and Lebanon (north) to Euphrates River (further north).

b. From the land of Hittites (east) to the great sea (west).

2. Joshua told that no man will be able to stand before him – God will not fail nor forsake Joshua.

3. Joshua told to be strong and of good courage.

 a. Jehovah is with Joshua whitersoever he goeth.

4. Joshua told to do according to all the Law – will prosper.   

B. Joshua commands officers to prepare people for passing over the Jordan River in three days (1:10-11).

 1. People prepare victuals.

            C.  Joshua addressed the tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh    (1:12-18; Numbers 32).

1. Will receive land promised to Moses by Jehovah on east side of Jordan River.

2. Men of valor are to go and fight with other tribes for their possession, and then return to their land east of the Jordan.

D. Joshua sends two spies from Shittim to Jericho to spy out the land (2:1-24).

 1. Spies are received and hidden by Rahab the harlot.

a. Encourages own men to pursue quickly after the spies who she said had left the city.

b. Hides men on top of roof in flax.

c. Believes in Jehovah as God of heaven and earth.

d. Makes spies swear to save her household – scarlet thread in window marks the house to save.

e. Spies let down by cord through her window and wall

  2. Spies hide in mountains for three days – return to report to Joshua.

a. Report: “Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land...”

 E. Israel’s passage to the Jordan River (3:1-17).

1. People commanded to follow the Ark of the Covenant at a distance of a thousand yards to see where they should cross the Jordan River.

2. When priests’ feet touch the Jordan, the water from the north will be cut off and stand in one heap.

 a. Manifests that God is with the people – will take the land.

3. The priests with the ark stand on dry land in midst of the Jordan till all Israel passed over.
