JOSHUA: LESSON FIVE


         I. ISRAEL’S NORTHERN CONQUEST AND SUMMARY OF ALL CONQUESTS (Chapters 11-12).

A. Joshua’s victory at the waters of Merom (11:1-15)

     1. Confederacy of kings headed by Jabin, King of Hazor (v. 1-5)

         a. Much people – “as the sand that is upon the seashore.”

         b. Very many horses and chariots.

     2. Jehovah gives encouragement that Israel will be victorious (v. 6).

         a. God picks the next day as the day of victory.

         b. Commandment to hock (cut sinew behind hoof) horses

    3. Joshua comes suddenly on enemy at Merom (v. 7-9)

        a. Enemy scattered northward – Sidon

        b. Enemy scattered westward – Msrephoth – maim

        c. Enemy scattered eastward – Valley of Mizpeh (at Mt. Hermon)

        d. Jehovah delivers – Joshua obeys God’s orders.

    4. Joshua turns back from pursuing enemy to destroy Hazor and king (v. 10-15).

        a. All slain with sword – “there  are not left that breathed”

        b. Unlike the other strong cities, Hazor is burned.

        c. Spoils taken and cattle unto themselves.

        d. As Moses had once commanded, Joshua obeyed “he left nothing of all that that Jehovah commanded               Moses.”


B. Summary of conquests west of the Jordan in Canaan (11:16-23)

     1. Joshua takes all the land from Mt. Halak (South) to Baal-gad under Mt. Hermon (North).

     2. All the kings put to death.  

     3. No city made peace but the Hivite inhabitants of Gibeon.  

     4. Jehovah had hardened the Canaanites’ hearts – He allowed their own self-willed perverseness to             accomplish His plans.

     5. The Anakim (Giants) cut off from the land except in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

     6. After a long time in fighting, the land had rest from war.

     7. Joshua took the land as commanded, and gave it for an inheritance unto Israel.


C. Summary of Israel’s conquests east of the Jordan under Moses (12:1-6)

     1. Land claimed from the Valley of the Arnon (South) unto Mt. Hermon (North).

     2. Moses gave this territory as possession to:

         a. Reubenites

         b. Gadites

         c. Half-tribe of Manasseh


D. Summary of Israel’s conquests west of the Jordan under Joshua (12:7-23)

     1. Land conquered from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon (North) to Mt. Halak (South).

     2. The Hittite, Amorite, Canaanite, Perizzite, Hivite, and Jebusite all defeated.

     3. Land given to Israel for a possession according  to their tribes.

     4. Thirty-one kings defeated in campaigns.

         a. the central and southern campaigns (twenty fell)

         b. the northern campaign – (eleven fell)
