JOSHUA: LESSON 6


VI. DIVISION OF LAND ON THE EAST AND WEST SIDE OF THE JORDAN (Chapters 13-17)

A. Much land to be possessed – Philistines and other indigenous tribes in Canaan still needed to be driven out (13:1-7).

B. Land described that was given by Moses to tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh (13:8-33).

1. East of Jordan River

2. Boundaries as a whole are set (v. 8-14)

3. Portions distributed among the three tribes (v. 15-33)

C. Land inheritance distributed by lot (14:1-5)

1. For 9 tribes and the half tribe of Manasseh

2. Tribe of Levi do not receive inheritance of land

D. Special inheritance given to Caleb – Hebron (14:6-15)

1. At age 85, he is still strong and willing to possess his possession.

E. The inheritance allotted to the tribe of JUDAH (15:1-63)

1. Southern portion of Canaan

2. Caleb gives his daughter Achsah to Othniel as promised for conquering Kiriathsepher.

a. At the request of Achsah, the land containing springs of water added to inheritance.

3. Jebusites not conquered.

F. The inheritance allotted to the tribe of Joseph – EPHRAIM and MANASSEH (16:1-17:18)

1. Central portion of Canaan

2. One lot given that included Ephraim and Manasseh (16:1-3)

3. Borders of Ephraim – Canaanite under tribute, but not driven out (16:5-10)

4. Borders of Manasseh – Canaanite under tribute, but not driven out (17:1-13)

a. Daughters of Manasseh receive inheritance

5. Tribes of Joseph complain of having only one lot – Joshua encourages them to drive out Canaanites to receive it.
