LEVITICUS – LESSON NINE

(Chapters 19-20)


 Living a holy life before God demands we treat others justly. Obeying the Ten Commandments, the Israelite would be holy before God. In this lesson we will see how the commandments through Moses were applied, and be impressed with how serious God is regarding His revealed Law as we see the death penalty being applied when God’s commandments are disobeyed.


IX. LAWS REGARDING HOLINESS TOWARD GOD AND RIGHTEOUSNESS TOWARD MAN (Chapters 19-20)

A. Reason for holiness – Jehovah is holy and is God (19:2)

B. Reverence for parents – fifth commandment (19:3)

C. Keep the sabbaths – fourth commandment (19:3)

D. Prohibition of idolatry – first and second commandment (19:4)

E. Peace offering – cannot be eaten on third day (19:8)

F. Parts of land and vineyard left after harvest for the poor and the sojourner (19:9-10)

G. Prohibition of stealing – eighth commandment (19:11)

H. Prohibition of cheating and lying (19:11-12)

    1. Profaning the name of God – third commandment

 I. Prohibition of taking advantage of neighbor (19:13-14)

    1. Cannot keep wages from hired servant overnight

    2. Cannot curse deaf; nor put stumbling block in front of the blind.

J. Justice must be rendered in judgments – no partiality (19:15)

K Prohibition of tale bearing – no gossiping (19:16)

L. Prohibition of false accusations – leading to death (19:16)

M. Must not hate – must rebuke neighbor in sin (19:17-18)

    1. Cannot bear a  grudge or take vengeance – love neighbor as self

    2. If no rebuke – bear sin.

N. Prohibition of mixing two kinds of animals and fiber (19:19)

O. Law concerning sexual relations with a slave woman betrothed (19:20-22)

    1. No death penalty

    2. Trespass offering offered – sin forgiven

P Fruit of trees planted in Canaan not to be eaten until fifth year (19:23-25)

    1. In fourth year, fruit is holy unto Jehovah.

W. Must show kindness to stranger – once stranger also in Egypt (19:33-34)

X. Must use just measurements (19:35-37)

Y. Punishments and promises connected with laws (Chapter 20)

    1. Give seed to Molech – put to death (20:1-5)

        a. God against man and his family if people do not put the man to death.

                2. Turn to deceptive magic or practice it – cut off from among his people;    stoned to death (20:6-7, 27)

                3. Curse father or mother – blood shall be upon him (20:9)

    4. Sexual sins of adultery, incest, homosexuality, bestiality – all participants put to death (20:10-11)

    5. Keep all of God’s commandments and be a people separated unto God – will enjoy land flowing with milk and         honey (20:22-26)

        a. If not – land will vomit you out of the land like it did the previous nation.

LEVITICUS – LESSON TEN

(Chapters 21-22)


 God’s holy character must be constantly manifested before people. The priests, who the people saw offer up the sacrifices to God, must reflect holiness before God. Therefore, those offering the sacrifices in the office of the priesthood had to meet certain criterion. No defilement with the dead,  no physical deformities, restrictions even to the extent of whom the high priest could marry are all covered in this section of Leviticus. In the context of holiness before God, a summary of the characteristics of the animals that could be offered in certain sacrifices are given.


X. LAWS REGARDING HOLINESS OF PRIESTS AND THE OFFERINGS (Chapters 21-22)

A. Instruction to priests regarding the dead (21:1-6)

1. Priests defiled if in contact with dead – EXCEPT for funeral rites for immediate family.

2. No cutting or marring flesh allowed for mourning the dead

B. Instruction to priests regarding wives and daughters (21:7-9)

1. No harlot, profaned woman (a seduced woman) or divorced woman can be taken to wife.

2. Profaning daughter (harlot) – burned with fire

3. Reason: priest is holy unto God offering the bread of God.

C. Instruction to high priest (21:10-15)

1. When in service, one cannot go to dead body, even if family is involved – the crown of anointing oil is upon him.

2. Can only marry a virgin of own people

D. Priests with physical handicaps and deformities not allowed to offer sacrifices (21:16-23)

1. Cannot go into the veil or approach the altar – profane the sanctuary of God.

2. May eat of those sacrifices apportioned to priests.

E. Defiled priest not to officiate or partake of the offerings (22:1-9)

1. Must first become clean – bathe flesh, etc. – clean after sun goes down and then can partake

2. Penalty for disobeying God’s charge: death

F. Instruction concerning those connected wit the priest and their right to partake of the sacrifices (22:10-16)

            1. Visitor or hired servant or priest cannot partake.

            2. Priest’s bought slave can partake – part of the home.

            3. Priest’s daughter…

                a. If married to a stranger – cannot partake

    b. If widowed or divorced without children – can partake – part of the home again

G. Animals sacrificed to be unblemished and of age (22:17-29)

1. Animals with more or less normal body parts can be offered for FREE-WILL offerings.

2. Animals from foreigner considered blemished

3. Animal must be at least eight days old – first seven days of life, animal is with his nursing mother.

4. Mother and young are not to be killed on the same day.

H. Eating of THANKS-GIVING offering on the same day it is offered (22:29-30)

            1. Profaning the name of God – third commandment
