LUKE – LESSON 24


I. JESUS’ RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION (24:1-53)

A. The fact of Jesus’ resurrection revealed to women disciples (v. 1-22).

1. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women of Galilee told by two angels of Jesus’ resurrection.

2. Women speak of the resurrection to the apostles who disbelieve them.

3. Peter runs to look in the tomb and returns to his home in wonderment.

B. The risen Christ appears to Cleopas and his traveling companion on their way to the village of Emmaus (v. 23-35).

1. The two are questioning one another over events in Jerusalem, they meet up with Jesus- they do not recognize Jesus.

2. Jesus interprets things concerning Him from the Scriptures.

3. After eating with them, their eyes are opened to know Jesus – Jesus vanishes out of their sight.

 C. The risen Christ appears to the apostles (v. 36-49)

      1. Appears with declaration of peace

      2. Appears bodily inviting apostles to touch Him – not just a spirit.

      3. Eats broiled fish with apostles

      4. Opens apostles’ minds with understanding of the fulfillment of the Scriptures.

      5. Commands apostles to wait in Jerusalem until they are clothed with power from on high.

 D. Jesus Christ ascends into heaven (v.50-53).

      1. Near Bethany, Jesus blesses apostles and then is carried into heaven.

      2. Apostles return with joy to Jerusalem.
